Self-Worth Therapy in New York, NY

For better or worse, we are a culture of comparison. Consequently, we are conditioned to compare ourselves with others. And, of course, we will all have moments of doubt where we question if we’re “good enough.”

It’s common and for feelings of self-worth to ebb and flow throughout different stages of your life. However, sometimes these feelings of low self-worth or low self-esteem can intensify. When that happens, they can have overwhelming consequences on our lives including depression, anxiety, and general unhappiness.

Often, this culture of comparison robs us of the ability to come into full acceptance of our own individuality. And then, we begin the toxic practice of seeking our own self-worth, self-value, and self-acceptance from external sources and people rather than from ourselves.

At Steady NYC in Midtown Manhattan, New York, our psychotherapists' practice is rooted in the power of the mind/body/spirit connection, we know there are many external factors that can contribute to feelings of self-worth and low self-esteem. Certain events from our past and our present, as well as harmful words or actions from friends, family, loved ones, or co-workers can be painful and difficult to move past. When we internalize these feelings they can negatively affect how we see ourselves and they can cause a crippling effect on how we move in this world.

Our team works with you to discover the internal or external factors that influence your negative self-perceptions. Using proven therapeutic strategies, we’ll share tools and skills that will help reverse these negative self-perceptions to help you discover a renewed sense of self and purpose.

The Effects of Negative Self-Worth or Self-Esteem

Harmful Effects of Negative Self-Worth or Self-Esteem

There are many harmful effects associated with feelings of low self-esteem or low self-worth. Among these are higher risk for substance abuse, self harm behaviors, eating disorders, unhealthy relationships (codependency and/or abusive and controlling), and “people pleasing.”

Negative self talk can also contribute to a distorted view of a person’s self-worth. We work with people to identify this negative self-talk, replace the internal dialogue with truer statements and beliefs so they can develop positive, worthy, and valued feelings of self.

Factors That Can Influence Self-Worth or Self-Esteem

We work with people to help them identify the internal and external factors that contribute to their feelings of low self-worth and low self-esteem. Often, in our work, we discover a past physical or emotional trauma that is still unresolved, which is negatively affecting their self-perception and thus their self-worth and self-esteem. This trauma can be anything from sexual assault or abuse, to bullying, to an overly critical caregiver, a poor work review, or lack of a competent role model in childhood or adolescence.

Reclaiming Your Life

Much of our work at Steady NYC leans heavily on the teachings of BrenéBrown, author of The Gifts of Imperfection, Rising Strong and Daring Greatly. Regarding negative self-worth and self-esteem, Brown offers this wisdom: “Stay in your own lane. Comparison kills creativity and joy.”

We take her message to heart in our work with clients. Our goal is to help people move past comparing themselves to others and to stay focused on their strengths, their beliefs, and their own self-worth. Ultimately, we help clients come to understand and embrace the difference between depending on others

(which can be healthy and necessary as human beings), and being dependent on others to define our value and worth (unhealthy). Our goal is to help people reclaim a strong sense of self-worth and self-esteem.

Our therapists are highly trained to work with clients to examine their history, uncover any underlying reasons for diminished feelings of self-worth or self-esteem, and then adopt coping strategies to begin to set boundaries and restore a positive and meaningful sense of purpose and self.
